November 09, 2005One billion dollar clean-up$1 billion to clean up Guatemala after hurricane Guatemala City (AP) -- Flooding and mudslides fueled by Hurricane Stan in early October caused almost one billion dollars in damage in Guatemala, according to a report by a U.N. agency issued Tuesday. The Economic Commission for Latin America said the damages to homes, crops, roads and infrastructure amounted to $415 million, and lost income and production amounted to an additional $567 million. "Knowing the amount of damages is essential for reconstruction," said Roberto Gonzalez Diaz-Duran, who heads up reconstruction efforts for the Guatemalan president's office. "Now we have to work on the financial viability of the reconstruction." Hurricane Stan hit southern Mexico at Category 1 strength on Oct. 4, causing flooding and mudslides that killed 71 people in the southern state of Chiapas and leaving 669 dead -- and 844 missing -- in neighboring Guatemala.
