Guatemalans living abroad sent $1.75 billion home during the first half of 2006, a 20.8% increase from the year-ago period, the Bank of Guatemala said Thursday.
Remittances totaled $2.99 billion last year, making Guatemala the fourth-largest recipient of remittances in Latin America behind Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, according to the Inter-American Development Bank.
Elsewhere in Central America, remittances to El Salvador grew 17.7% to $1.62 billion in the first half, the country's central bank said Tuesday.
