I felt the earth move
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around
Carole King Lyrics
There are few things in life more disquieting than having your floor, walls, and ceiling suddenly start swaying.
The rocking back-and-forth motion... which, in other circumstances (say on a porch swing or a hammock) would actually be soothing, turns out to be quiet stressful when it happens inside supposedly solid structures.
Yes, the above Carole King lyrics are especially appropriate. Just moments ago, in the midst of a crazy downpour, Guatemala City shook with a minor earthquake tremor. Nothing serious, at least where I’m at. Nothing fell, nothing cracked, nothing broke. To be honest, my next-door neighbor was so involved in a telephone conversation that he didn’t even notice it.
But I certainly did. When my chair started boogieing by itself... I did the “sit and wait” test: is the shaking getting stronger, or is this going to be a quick and easy ride?
Meanwhile, my mind raced: what do I need to take with me if I have to haul butt out of my collapsing apartment? My first three answers were: my laptop, external hard drive, and camera. (Which I guess officially defines me as a photo-geek.)
All is quiet now... even the rain has ended. But you can bet that I’ll be sleeping with my sneakers next to my bed tonight!

Yeah, sis, I'm afraid it's true. Anyway who is worried about their external hard drive during an earthquake is an official geek. ("Save the digital photos" would be my final words as the walls came tumbling down.)
Thankfully, the "earthquake" that the news articles are going on about, wasn't much more than a tremor, at least here in Guatemala City.
Still, it will be nice to visit the relatively earthquake-free state of New York next week!
