Greetings from NY!
Hey everyone,
Sorry for the silence, but I decided to go "unplugged" for my first week of vacation visiting my family here in New York.
In fact, I'd write more now but my brother is about to pick me up for a day of fishing at the pond with my nephews. If we catch anything I'll be sure to upload a photo or two. (If we don't, I'll at least post a note about the "one that got away"!)
If I had to make a quick observation about the difference between life in Guatemala City and life here in Westchester County, New York I'd have to say: green.
It's always shocking to come home and see so much GREEN. Green trees, green bushes, green plants, and lots and lots of green, green grass. So much bus-exhaust-free oxygen that it almost makes me dizzy.
Well, enough clickety-clack of the computer keyboard. It's time to catch me a trout or bass or marlin or something. (And heck, if the fish manage to outsmart us all day, maybe we'll extract our revenge tonight at a sushi restaurant.)
I hope you all are well and enjoying life wherever you may be!
Rob

(A. Blas y W. Ruano. PL: 08)

Predicting the Weather in Guatemala
In Guatemala it isn’t too difficult to predict the weather. During the rainy season (May through October), there’s a darn good chance that it’s going to rain. The other six months of the year, not so much.
“Ah, yes. Thank-you Rob for that brilliant meteorological insight,” you’re probably thinking to yourself (in that sarcastic way that you do.) “Now we can safely plan our picnics.”
But wait! Before you continue to belittle my best weather advice, let me finish...
You see, it’s not simply enough to know that it will rain during the rainy season. After all, it very rarely rains all day long. The key to staying dry during the wet months is knowing when it will start to rain.
And there, my friends, I can be of assistance!
So here, for the first (and most likely only) time, I will reveal to you the secret of predicting exactly when the rain will start to fall on any given day in Guatemala...
Ready?
Here it comes...
The rain will begin to fall exactly 20 minutes after I hang my wash out to dry on the roof of my apartment building. Trust me, it’s foolproof. (And I should know... I’m the fool who keeps thinking: “uh, maybe this time it won’t rain”.)
The photo below was taken yesterday, shortly after I hung two sheets, a blanket, and two pillowcases on the clothesline. (I swear, the sky was blue when I put the wash in the washing machine!)
Those of you alert readers are probably thinking to yourselves: “hey, wasn’t there also an earthquake in Guatemala yesterday?”
Yes, a wicked thunderstorm followed by a 6.8 earthquake.... every time I hang my clothes to dry, all hell breaks loose. Guatemala should be very afraid: I’m running low on clean socks!

Strong earthquake rocks Guatemala
Here’s the latest news of the quake, from the International Herald Tribune:
Strong earthquake rocks Guatemala
Guatemala City: A powerful shook Guatemala on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
The quake struck at 1:29 p.m. local time (1929 GMT) and was centered 70 miles (115 kilometers) southwest from Guatemala City off the Pacific coast, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It gave a preliminary calculation of magnitude of 6.8.
Firefighters in Guatemala City said they had no immediate reports of injury or damages, however the earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size, the geological survey said.
The quake was felt in neighboring El Salvador.

I felt the earth move
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around
Carole King Lyrics
There are few things in life more disquieting than having your floor, walls, and ceiling suddenly start swaying.
The rocking back-and-forth motion... which, in other circumstances (say on a porch swing or a hammock) would actually be soothing, turns out to be quiet stressful when it happens inside supposedly solid structures.
Yes, the above Carole King lyrics are especially appropriate. Just moments ago, in the midst of a crazy downpour, Guatemala City shook with a minor earthquake tremor. Nothing serious, at least where I’m at. Nothing fell, nothing cracked, nothing broke. To be honest, my next-door neighbor was so involved in a telephone conversation that he didn’t even notice it.
But I certainly did. When my chair started boogieing by itself... I did the “sit and wait” test: is the shaking getting stronger, or is this going to be a quick and easy ride?
Meanwhile, my mind raced: what do I need to take with me if I have to haul butt out of my collapsing apartment? My first three answers were: my laptop, external hard drive, and camera. (Which I guess officially defines me as a photo-geek.)
All is quiet now... even the rain has ended. But you can bet that I’ll be sleeping with my sneakers next to my bed tonight!

Day Laborer news update
Here’s a follow-up to yesterday’s article on the day laborers who won the lawsuit against the village of Mamaroneck in Westchester County, N.Y.
Day laborers win Westchester immunity
By Jim Fitzgerald
Associated Press
White Plains, N.Y. (AP) - Hours before the planned opening of a new day laborer hiring site today, a Westchester village ratified a tentative agreement prohibiting police from routinely asking workers' immigration status or otherwise discriminating against them.
The agreement, disclosed by plaintiffs' attorneys, comes after day laborers successfully sued the Village of Mamaroneck. It was ratified 3-1 Monday night by the Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees, though must still be approved by federal Judge Colleen McMahon.
The village would also pay more than half a million dollars of the workers' legal fees.
Because it would be a federal court-approved settlement, the agreement could influence the treatment of day laborers elsewhere around the country, where they have become an increasingly visible symbol of the immigration issue.

Day laborers win agreement

Wow, this is incredible news! Hopefully it will set a precedent for other areas with large day-laborer populations.
Workers, NY Village Reach Tentative Agreement on Day Laborers
White Plains, N.Y. (AP) -- Day laborers who successfully sued a Westchester village have won a tentative agreement that prohibits police officers from routinely asking their immigration status or otherwise discriminating against them, their lawyers said Monday.
In addition, the village must pay more than half a million dollars of the workers' legal fees, they said.
The agreement must be ratified by the Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees, which was to meet Monday night, and signed by federal Judge Colleen McMahon.

Corpus Christi
“Bang. Bang. Bang” Those are probably gunshots.
But “BangBangBangBangBangBangEtc.” is definitely the sound of a long string of fireworks being set off.
Thankfully it was that latter sound that had me leaping from my bed this morning. As I stepped out onto the balcony of my apartment, I saw my neighbor’s houses decked out in yellow & white balloons and ribbons. I also saw that the street was adorned with long alfombras, decorative carpets composed of fruits, flowers, and colored sawdust.
As the smoky aroma of incense and burnt firecrackers floated up to me, I made a quick decision. I rushed back inside, swapped my shorts for pants, grabbed my camera, and hit the sidewalk.
Thankfully I was just in time to catch the “Solemne Procesión del Corpus Christi”... The Solemn Procession of The Body of Christ, a Catholic celebration of the Eucharist.
The priest of the local parish, la Parroquia de San Pablo, was the heart of the celebration carrying el Santísimo: the cross which contains the consecrated host (the “Body of Christ”).
The procession ambled through the neighborhoods surrounding the parish, passing over the gorgeous hand-made alfombras, and occasionally stopping at the very ornate altars that some families had set up in front of their homes.
The procession finally ended up back at the church, to celebrate Mass.
The folks I had met along the way, invited me in... but I respectfully declined. By that point I was tired, sunburned, out of photos, and really wishing that I had taken the time to brush my teeth before running out of the apartment earlier that morning.
Update: the rest of the Corpus Christi photographs are now online!

Go Verve!
How about a big round of applause for Christine and the other frighteningly brilliant folks at Verve Hosting’s Support Department!!!
They broke down the walls of tyrannical technological tribulations to once again give voice to the silenced masses. (Translation: they got my blog comments working again.) And on a weekend, nonetheless!
What I really appreciate was the simplicity of it all. I wrote them a quick message describing the difficulty, and the next day I receive this email from Christine: “Hi Rob, test your comments now.”
Is that brilliant, or what?
So to Christine, and all the other tech gurus at Verve, muchas gracias!!!

Rudy's Antigua
There’s been something that I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. (Well, yes, find a store in Guatemala that sells Ben & Jerry’s N.Y. Super Fudge Chunk ice cream... but that’s not what I’m referring to.)
The striking photograph above, of a church in Antigua, was taken by the very talented photographer, Rudy Girón. Rudy has been a long-time supporter of my blog (you know, back when I was actually writing on a regular basis.) Now, I would like to return the favor and point you in the direction of his amazing website!
Antigua Guatemala Daily Photo is on the short-list of my daily “must-visit” blogs. Not only does Rudy have an incredible eye for photography, but his descriptions of Antigua are by turns funny, informative, and even profound.
My hat’s off to Rudy who, besides creating a terrific site, is frighteningly bilingual, and is the art editor of two of Guatemala’s essential magazines: Revue and Recrearte.
So why not take some time to stroll along the cobblestone streets of Rudy’s Antigua? Examine the ruins of ancient cathedrals, glance up at the majestic volcanoes, smell the spectacular flowers, and then pop into a café for a cappuccino. It’s almost like being there in person!

Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh
It seems that the comments section of the blog isn’t working. I have to admit that the error message is quite amusing though: “inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.”
That’s right, my dear reader, this is all your fault. Whatever you’re doing, knock it off!
Anyway... fear not: using my brilliant mind and vast knowledge of computers, I’m sure that I will find a quick fix to this problem. (That is to say that I sent an email to tech support that said “Help! I think I’ve broken the internet”.)
Until the comments are up-and-running again, please feel free to send warm thoughts and good vibes. (This offer does not apply to spammers.)

And.... we're back.
Hi. First of all, let me apologize for my prolonged absence from blogging. I hope that the following animated illustration will help explain my reasons for temporarily abandoning this website:
As you can see, I've made the leap into the world of photojournalism. (And, as you also can see, I've evidently specialized in covering the pro-taco movement springing up all over Guatemala.)
In all seriousness... last year I began volunteering with a brand new magazine in Guatemala, called EstePais. I was attracted the magazine's underlying purpose: to cover the major stories in Guatemala, but from a perspective which hopefully accentuates the positive, especially those Guatemalan men and women who struggle day-to-day to build a better Guatemala.
I'll be talking about the magazine a lot more in the upcoming days, but if you want to check it out now, our website address is: www.este-pais.com.
One of the biggest benefits to working at EstePais has been slowly building up an archive of images, that I now want to share with you. Trying to figure out the best way of presenting this massive... and growing... collection of photographs, has been somewhat daunting.
But during these many days of bloggish silence, I've been working on revamping my entire Guatemala photography section. Today I'm proud to share with you the first part of the new (and hopefully improved) section: Guatemala's Personalities.
These are some of the fine folks that I have had the privilege of photographing during interviews for EstePais magazine.
I hope you'll enjoy these portraits of some of Guatemala's movers and shakers. Obviously, the list is just a beginning and I will be continuously updating it.
There's plenty more to come... I hope you join me (or, actually, REjoin me) as I officially launch elcanche.com, version 2.0!
